it might be more sensible to take the beta art assets and transfer them to the new client then trying to use a old client

You wouldn't want to use a beta client for the server because it wouldn't be able to do anything to do with dsoma or conti, and things like trace, the hair shop, auction, etc, couldn't be used because the beta client doesn't have those DLGs (and you can't import them from esoma because the beta DLGs are in a different format so the client wouldn't be able to read the new ones).

These clients aren't intended for use deccy, they do have skins auras and magics which were unique to the betas which you could rip and use in a modern server if you wanted a beta style server

For all I know, and this is probably the case, the beta clients both have at least some packets which are not compatible with 1p1. If the packet containing your inventory items was different for instance, then the client wouldn't know how to display that data in your inventory properly. By the sounds of things, the login packets or sequence of packets that 1p1 is sending is different to what the beta client is expecting.

If that's the case then it'll be an up-hill struggle to get it working, and if all you want is a beta-style server then you can use the esoma client, only swap out the SPLs that are different (holding of two-handed weapons and so on) with the beta ones. Though for the login and character select/create dialogs you would have to edit the existing DLG files with the old images and then hex the area data to move the coordinates of the text boxes, buttons, etc.
