Building Blocks - New Dungeons?

Postby wolfetone » Thu Oct 29, 2009 4:44 pm

Basically what ive done here is created some cliffs, with different angles and textures.
Using these building blocks, Im guessing, it might be possible to create some sweet
looking dungeons.

By looking at the attachment you might get a sudden impression that ive
just handed you this on a plate but it isnt as easy as it looks. First... the
cliffs arnt built to in-game scale, so you would need to scale these where
appropriate.

You would need to have some basic knowledge of photoshop... mostly
in regards to layering and cloning, These cliffs arnt like lego, they wont
just snap together, some smart use of the clone tool would cure this though.

I know nout about map making for this game but having some knowledge about
the map maker and the sprite libraries would help also.

Anyways
Have a go and see what your made off :p

I think these could definitely be used. The map editor has a feature, so that you can select areas on these tiles, so if you wanted to use these cliffs, u could just select it in the middle area - so it would probably look right then when repeating the cliff.

In fact... I'll have a shot at making a dungeon but im going to photoshop mine, I enjoy making slight changes here and there... which im sure you wouldnt be able to do via the map editor.. you could do little things on the fly I guess, but thats about all.

To be fair mate, out of all the soma areas, I think maps is probably one of the simpler ones, its just if your doing a big map, it can get very tedious when mapping out the move/no move areas. Took me a while to do it on my fornway map, but the end result was good.

Once again mate, these look really good! I especaily like the third one. Great job in keeping them in line with the Soma look.

Looking forward to seeing what kind of map you come up with!

Well.. im not going to upload my one, because its not very good, but
those materials can certainly be worked with. I still think it would be a better idea
to design maps in photoshop, once done, slice up the master and export as a host of
smaller images, which in turn can be put into the games libraries. Then from there,
put all the smaller images back together in the map editor like a jigsaw puzzle.

Theres absolutly no chance the game devs for soma scratch built the maps in the editor.
Theres just no chance of it. Im about 99% certain it was all done in photoshop or somethihng
similiar.

i thought the editor was designed by finto or other people from the soma commuinty, but like you said do in photoshop then put into map editor to finish it then the map itself would look better then standard map and has it orginality to it

If I remember rightly they translated the original tools that were used by the soma designers - and fixed some of the functionality.

Ive been giving it a rest, im out steam design wise, but dont worry, I generally get sudden bursts
