Set Status

We are currently implementing the /setstatus command for ingame status updates. Which will be shown on the homepage. Try to think of it as ingame twitter or facebook update but for somadev.

Filters and tags
Code: Select all
:P, :O,:D,,,,,:), :(,  ;)

Currently the setstatus will reference these tags which you can use when setting your status.

A question
However we've come to a stopping point would you rather state your forum username or charactername when setting the status?

i.e my character name is ISY but my forumname linked to the account is iSylver

thus a status can either show

Code: Select all
ISY: is watching the emulator testing closely

or

Code: Select all
iSylver: is watching the emulator testing closely

We already have done :). Every account made is linked to the forum account.

However, some player may not want to share the information.

Update

Now coded a pretty extensive tag system for the set status which checks for incomplete tags and adds them to the end of your status also implemented a few emotes for players to use.

Still looking for ideas of further implementation.

hmm I'd say the purpose of the status system is to give people who aren't already playing the impression of the community based on that assumption here is a few ideas:

add a tick box to forum accounts that says link forum and game account if it is ticked then on mouse over of your name have your forum avatar (resized appropriately). If it is un ticked then construct an avatar using layers of pngs (seen a tutorial somewhere) first check for race, then gender, then skin colour, and finally hair style then construct the avatar with those attributes. (perhaps the colour of the glowing border could represent moral)

other information you could add to tooltips(or even the current setup) are:
date of post
town post was made in
title (unused but could be used in future)

for example

Noblemen arcanine says: FREE TIBET in thousand year tree town, at 09:04, today.

maybe a different font for everything that is automatically added, or some other sort of distinction.

Plus it's something new it allows a social network in and out of the game and allows
users to express an opinion or notify others what they are up to.

Just a coupel of suggestions on this. It seems that theres only ever 5 posts displayed at a time, with the oldest being deleted. I think it would be better to show alot more, as with a higher UC people will be changeing status' all the time. Maybe make it like the twitter home page, where even if someone creates a new status, the old one is still visable, with the time it was posted shown.

Also maybe make it so you could scroll down through them to view ones that have gone off the main area?

I agree, a social list would be good, rather than just sending someone a message and hoping they are online.

Having a "Friends List" type thing would be really handy imo
