Surprised to see this still going

Postby Badgerr » Fri Apr 26, 2013 9:43 am

Many years after Soma was already considered old, it's nice to see you all still working on it. I had forgotten about this place until I saw Rhys post a link on facebook (god knows why I have him on Facebook :P).

I've been poking around a bit, I'm sad to see that the source related projects didn't really go anywhere - how much work actually goes into the applications these days?

How insulting... do you know how much more we can do now than we could ever do before?

to badgerr:
Which source projects are you talking about?
Client source (C/C++ w/ DX)
Client source (C/C++ w/ GL)
Client source (java)
Client source (html canvas)
Server EMU source (C/C++)
Server Extension (C/C++)
Client Extension (C/C++)

The last two are pretty active still with fin working on his own implementation and remix and myself working on rauban's implementation.

I could talk about the rest but I've not had as much time working on clients as fin or phil or the others who put alot work on it but there have been either road blocks or annoyances that either slow down the work on them or move in to an entirely different direction hence so many different client source variations.

It is great that you guys can now change/add so many new things to the game. The community and myelf really appeciate the work you've all done, esoma got a lot of things wrong and there have been some much needed changed on the test server e.g constitution change.

It''s obvious the devs enjoy programming/creating new things for Soma, but it's starting to feel like they are only interested in the challenge of developing a new feature - a lot of which are utterly pointless to be implementing at the moment and don't get us anywhere nearer to an official release.

It's been around 5 years worth of development, so so many changes have been made but the one thing you haven't managed to do is release the official server...

I'm going to be honest now... I don't think the devs actually care whether the server is released officially or not. Many of them don't play Soma, their only interest in the game is to develop new features for it, programming or whatever you do to change things in Soma is blatently a hobby of theirs or part of their uni/college course. They will keep developing endless new things for Soma, and don't get me wrong some will be pretty damn good... BUT the server will never be ready for release, there will always be something else that has to be developed before it's ready!

What they need to do is focus only development of the necessary things which would make the official server ready for release... if there even is anything else that needs adding apart from rested XP that is. I'm sure the devs have a list of 300 things that must be added before release though :P!

Stop working on things that we don't need yet, the rates are going to be low on official server anyway so once you release the server you can revert back to developing the 'fun/challenging features' I know you guys enjoy creating so much!

Where did the GL client source come from? Did someone port the DX7 renderer to GL? And is the html just using that GL port as WebGL?

I'd be quite interested to see what the extensions can do - as far as I could tell from what's in their respective forum sections, it's not very documented...

source was ported from dx7 to 8/9 by fin, since then it been adaped by a few of us who have made our own bits and pieces, some of which we share with each other. myself, i havnt even thought about adating it to GL when theres so much i can do with DX when it comes to making a near orig implimentation of the game. however when it comes to making extensions im not as fluent as rau or fin at backtracking functions, but when it comes to securing the data between client and server theres not many who can hide/track the way i do.

fin did both actually.. there should be videos of them on the forums some place. With extensions you can overwrite any thing you want and you can call the original functions if you need to with in them.

to ero:
I'm sure I'm exempt from that since I've already released my server right? it seems like you say you just want a server to be released but from what I've seen it still isn't enough. There's been talk about just lower rates and release, well people tried that too and people just stopped playing after a few days.
